X Wing Minatures Game Bedworth Tournament Report Part 1- Or How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Hate Martin’s Dice

So I posted earlier my Bedworth Tournament List here. I went into this tournament with a clear theme: things I thought were cool. Although this is a much richer theme and background than most of the fluff from IYGDTTWT (seriously, soon he’ll post his goblin magic hat background soon and you’ll see) I know my list of supreme style and awesome has 2 bad match ups:

  • Lists able to soak a lot of shots without losing damage output, as they can survive my shooting then delete me
  • High pilot skill lists that move after my nippy ones and shoot before them, leaving me with the deletion problem again

Also as usual in my head as I write this each game seemed almost to have a theme song, so I’ll be narrating these games with music!

Game one vs Keith

Theme song for my poor Imperials: This Queen Classic

100 points
Gold Squadron Pilot (22)
Y-Wing (18), Blaster Turret (4)
Gold Squadron Pilot (22)
Y-Wing (18), Blaster Turret (4)
Han Solo (56)
YT-1300 (46), Chewbacca (4), Gunner (5), Millennium Falcon (1)

So in my first game I got…the list I suck against. Honestly I couldn’t have designed a worst list to play against without involving the words Double Falcon. This was an aim now to try to take some points off him on to help my overall campaign. So I swooped in to do damage:

X wing game 1 - moving in

In this game the Rebels swooped in perfect formation, the legendary tactic of line up and push it forwards. Tetran died early in close, Carnor got blasted by the falcon and Fett was pinged to death and the Imperials didn’t even have to waste fuel on that pesky turning. Even my shiny new heavy laser cannon barely did anything. I stripped 3 shields, got tabled and we’re done:

X wing game 1 - and we're done!

Result: 100-0 kicking, and I was lucky to get nil.

Game 2 Vs Martin

Theme Song: for Martin, the nicest man in gaming

100 points
Rexler Brath (48)
TIE Defender (37), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Veteran Instincts (1), Stealth Device (3)
Boba Fett (52)
Firespray-31 (39), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Seismic Charges (2), Veteran Instincts (1), Recon Specialist (3)

So fresh from my complete destruction i began the inevitable migration to the bottom tables and in the second round came up against Martin. Martin is one of the nicest gamers I play against and we have a history of the games coming down to single rolls. However every single one of them has been enjoyable and great fun, a wonderfully sporting opponent I knew I’d enjoy playing him.

His list however fell into the second of my worst match ups above. I know it was bad for me, as he’d played me a fortnight ago and tabled me. He was hard to kill and lowest pilot skill was 9! Also as I learnt the TIE defender 4 K-turn for white is very useful.

X wing - game 2 skilled manouvering!

This was a close game with lots of narrow maneuvering and dodging and diving. We’d chipped away at each other I’d lost one of my Ties, Martin was getting closer and closer to losing a ship. I’d added a heavy Laser Cannon on Fett purely due to how well Martian did with them in the warm up games. Much to my frustration it was consistently getting 1 hit on 4 dice. As Darren helpfully pointed out :

“Sometimes consistency isn’t great, Like runny custard”

Cheers for that Darren

Finally it’d come down to two ships a piece, I was for one on top with 5 hits left on Fett and 2 on my remaining Imperial Ace. Martin rolled his first heavy laser cannon shot – 4 hits, there goes Fett. He then proceeded to roll 2 more sets of 4 hits to take Ace off the board with both his ships on a single hull left each.

X wing - Last Ace Standing

When I’d recovered my jaw and checked his dice for weights, He’d celebrated in his traditional manner, by being nice and humble! (see you can’t even hate him!).

Result – Another 100-0 loss. This time i was unlucky it wasn’t the other way!

So two games in 0-2 in the Tourney and -200 on points difference.

I know what you’re thinking, yes, my comeback will be epic!

Part two with games 2-5 will be added shortly.

In the meantime comments, as ever, are welcome.

  1. it’s great to read your report on a a great game and remember a fantastic day of gaming , I had forgot just how close that one went but I’m not surprised because I think all ours are . Fate had decided that my best heavy laser cannon shots seemed reserved for you all day . Really enjoyed reading your report on the day , looking forward to the next part .
